No ice at the North Pole

Polar scientists reveal dramatic new evidence of climate change. It seems unthinkable, but for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year.
The disappearance of the Arctic sea ice, making it possible to reach the Pole sailing in a boat through open water, would be one of the most dramatic - and worrying - examples of the impact of global warming on the planet. Scientists say the ice at 90 degrees north may well have melted away by the summer.
"From the viewpoint of science, the North Pole is just another point on the globe, but symbolically it is hugely important. There is supposed to be ice at the North Pole, not open water," said Mark Serreze of the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado.

Following Anti Fraud investigation Gabriel Resources refuses to pay $4.8M in income tax charge

As a result of two anti-fraud investigations from the part of Romanian tax authorities who for 2007 alone charged Gabriel with having $4.8M in income tax charges, penalties and interest, Gabriel Resources yesterday announced that it refuses to pay these charges.

Civil society supports Environment Minister Attila Korodi

17 environmental NGOs today signed a letter addressed to Romania's Environment Minister Attila Korodi and State Secretary Silviu Stoica,
occasioned by the fact that RMGC initiated a court action against the decision to suspend the Rosia Montana Project's EIA procedure. The action was initiated against the Romanian Ministry for the Environment and Sustainable Development, as well as against the two statesmen personally. Full text
